Today, from this tiny band of courageous Seminoles who received their sovereignty from the United States in 1957, has risen a proud nation of approximately 2,000 members. Self reliant, independent and self-governing, they live on five Florida reservations : Big Cypress, Hollywood (Dania), Brighton (Lake Okeechobee), Immokalee (in 1961, the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians  of Florida became a sovereign nation), and now Tampa, a reservation in 1981.
